Friday Funday: Delta’s flash mob video

Delta has posted a video of employees in Atlanta warbling in the South Concourse at ATL, and then flash mobbing (which starts at about 1:10) at airports in Atlanta, New York and in Detroit. The video’s gone viral– last night it had 300 views. Today as we post this, view count is approaching 20,000. ABC News just posted it on their site this morning.

Take a gander and let us know what you think. See any familiar faces? Love it or loathe it…we’d love to hear your take. Leave your comments below.

Here goes! Woot!

I wish i had been in an airport yesterday. This looks like fun and the employees look happy. Good job!

  • Over Delta! says:

Flash mobs have “jumped the shark.” When a behemoth such as Delta is using it as an attempt at ground swell marketing it feels forced and artificial. It loses it authenticity and interest. It doesn’t fit their culture and they can’t change by doing this. Ughh!

  • Walt Site says:

Great. Need more of this kind of spirit.

  • JK says:

Ok, the opening was so cringe-worthy I was ready to switch to Southwest. But then I kept watching, and it just got funnier and funnier. Good job, Delta reps! Just please, don’t play the video on the planes while boarding – one viewing is enough, and I would hate to have it replace “Smoking…is not allowed.” (Btw, why weren’t the finger-wagging red-head and smiley life-jacket guy in the video???)

  • Atlantaguy says:

Hmmm… look at ATL and DTW closely. The guy two people over from the professional lead dancer in Altanta is actually the same guy (professional) leading NYC.

  • SP says:

Just wish ALL the Delta employees exuded this kind of excitment when you fly with them. Maybe this will kick start better customer service from Delta. Most of their flight attendants act as if they need an anger management course.

  • Eric Wallens says:

Atlanta native now living in Seattle – proud of my hometown! Good job folks at Delta.

  • CM says:

The first 1:25 was painful. The actual flash mob and dancing was better. More practice on the routine would have been helpful, still it might have been fun to see in person.

  • Nigel Glover says:

I think they are worried about Sunday’s arrival at ATL.

  • nancy says:

That’s the “old” Delta I love and remember. Good job guys!

  • John L says:

Get over yourself “Over Delta!” Try to have a little fun out of your life instead of being a crab. Sure, Delta’s got problems and we don’t always agree with everything they do (and sometime anything they do) but this is cool! Is a flash mob EVER spontaneous? I don’t think so! Take it for what it is and try a smile. It works better.

  • JGM says:

Loathe it. Put the bloody energy into better service. And no I am not a infrequent traveler.

  • Nancy C says:

Kind of cute, but should have had more of the singers and less of the flash mobs.

  • SWC says:

Where is the disclaimer that states, “No flights were delayed or baggage lost during the making of this video”? Will we soon see a Delta Flight Attendant rapping? Okay..it was entertaining :) I do agree with JK and “Over Delta” – please do not start showing this on the flights and flash Mob is getting a bit old (Where was Howie?).

  • I would be more impressed with a little more leg room and cessation of those ridiculous baggage fee’s.

  • Bob White says:

I think it’s entertaining and fun. I like it. And it says volumes about leadership allowing this.

  • lobstergreg says:

    Pretty cool! Great marketing!

  • GG Wright says:

That was cute, now spend a little more time giving good customer service by keeping my family seats together and stop saying the computer scrambled them up!!!!

  • Glamgrrl says:

Delta employees having fun – great way to shake a little enthusiasm into the day – don’t knock the flash mob because it’s not brand new – this was about team spirit. Looks like it worked. NYC had the best dancers!

  • Debbie says:

I think it was great! They really looked like they were enjoying themselves! I told one of the flight attendants on a flight out of ATL last weekend how nice it was to see a smile on all their faces. She said, “You know, it really isn’t that hard to smile! It makes the flight a lot more enjoyable too.” How right she is.

  • Gayle says:

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about! That’s almost worth an extra baggage charge! Well…maybe not! But Atlanta Rocks!

  • Ron Blaylock says:

This is outstanding and a lot of fun. Delta knows how to do it right.

  • katherine willett says:

we have got to ready for southwest! and take them on–let Delta show our passengers that we love our job and we can laugh and smile and get them to their destination having enjoyed the experience!! Go Delta!

  • Donna says:

Neat but should have melted back into the crowd at the end instead of taking bows.

  • Sam Costa says:

Let them have some fun! Glad to see Delta letting employees loosen up a bit. Good for morale and what’s good for morale is usually good for the customers. All airlines have some grumpy attendants– Valu-Jet uhh I mean AirTan always seems to have more than their share. Delta folks are usually good natured.

  • DeWhit says:

Hey ! That was great ! I enjoyed watching and hope all the Delta people had a lot of fun doing this. I think I saw Atlanta friends in the back !

  • Neil Kelley says:

I see this as another stunt – just like Porches at Gate side to pick up frequent travelers to make up for less than average service – Get it right Delta. I dont want to see dancing flight attendants, i want to see attentive and happy ones on airplanes. How much did you pay these flash mobbers to participate? Who came up with this idea?

  • Leomjc says:

I have several serious gripes with Delta and might be one of those who try Southwest, but I think this is really cool. It may be commercial etc. but it just made me smile.

  • Douglas says:

I really enjoyed it Chris – as always! So many negative comments, I highly doubt they paid anyone to participate. People get angry over anything like this, improve the service… blah blah blah…. Everyone here works for something, and no doubt almost everyone’s company spends money on things that some may not feel add value to the customer directly.

This is what makes a positive culture to an airline, which a good culture can seed a good environment for customers – I just returned back from ATL-JFK-PRG, PRG-AMS-ATL trip for a week and myself and others in our group all noticed how the ground staff in ATL was exceptionally above previous experience. Using names, recognizing Sky Priority quickly, late bag check in with no hassle (43 minutes before an int’l connecting flight via JFK).

Like previously said – Let them have some fun! The Baggage behind the scenes was pretty cool too – I’d rather have this over any of the other mainline carriers in the US.

At the time I received this post I was sitting next to a Delta Marketing person on my flight from AMS, she had not read the Ticket Yet and now also became a bit more keen on it. Thanks CHRIS!

  • atl FF says:

Find it somewhat ironic that Delta is exposing this playful side of their employees the same weekend that Southwest starts flying out of their home airport and biggest hub (ATL.) Makes this feel less than genuine.

  • Penny says:

Great to see employees having such fun!

  • JK's brother, JK says:

From the return of the Red Coats to the refreshed Crown Rooms (whatever) to the Porsche Ride to the refurbished MD-90′s to the flash mobs to the late March opening of Terminal C at LGA. You even have the NW flight attendants beginning to come around. Big deal…we don’t have 1st Class or a lounge!

    Regrettably, SWA

  • twright says:

I love flash mobs and hope one day I’ll be where one is performed! What’s wrong with a little fun?!?! Some of you are a litle too pessimestic and need to have a smile and fun. It did take practice for these people to pull this off and they were able to do it in multiple locations. Thanks The Ticket for giving the info – I thoroughly enjoyed it and will pass along The Ticket and this link to many friends!

  • pms girl says:

    Great Job!!! Keep smiling Delta!!!

  • boxermomtx says:

I really don’t understand some of the negative comments this piece received. How nice for people to table the stress in their work lives and take a few minutes down time. If more people did things like this, we might have fewer health issues.

  • Dawn Mullins says:

    Positive stuff….keep the vibes.
